We have all the questions for your answers.

ANSWERS.  Thomas Jefferson gives this advice: “Questions with reason even the existence of a God because, if there is one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.”

Questions are the beginning of UU religion.  Some other religions begin with answers, revelations, supposedly given to humankind long ago.  From these answers they form their creed.  UUism is non-creedal.  We also honor doubts.  ”By doubting we come to the truth,” said Cicero.  ”Faith and doubt are the twin offspring of mystery,” said John Mattuck, with sounds very Unitarian Universalist.  We study our UU religion with blindfolds off and without fear, an approach that is very demanding, and requires that we follow reason and inspiration wherever it may lead.

This doesn’t mean that UU’s believe nothing at all.  All members are entitled to their own beliefs: some are Christian, some Jewish, some Buddhist or another tradition.  Some are atheists, or may call themselves “humanists”  (who come in many kinds).  All are welcome, and the diversity is rich.

But questions are primary.  In A Chosen Faith: An Introduction to Unitarian Universalism one of the authors, Forrest Church – who belives in a God – says to someone who doesn’t believe: “Tell me about the God you don’t believe in.  The chances are that I don’t believe in ‘him’ either.”

Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams for when dreams go,
Lifes is a barren field, frozen with snow.
